My Little Louvre was purchased for a 4 year old, but doesn't seem appropriate whatsoever. The very first page is page 6? So I'm either missing 5 pages or they miss numbered them. On page 25 is a photo of a woman pinching another woman's nipple. I listened to the commentary at the Louvre and it gave several reasons to explain this photo. One of them was to suduce the king and the second to induce lactation for a woman who just had a baby. Neither of which are appropriate for a child to see or know. I wish I had read the other reviews. The seller however was very prompt and the book is in excellent condition.
I bought this before a trip to Paris with my 7 year old daughter. She read it many times before the trip. So, she was very excited to go into the Louvre and find the masterpieces she had seen in the book.
The art selected in the book is horrible and the accompanying stories worse - at times inappropriate for children. Does not provide any teachable info about the art. I purchased this book as a result of the glowing reviews...big mistake. Really got duped into a bad decision. Thankfully that doesn't happen often... Reviews usually are very helpful.
This is a very inconspicuous book that one could easily mistake for being a "baby" book. There is very little text, and it is skinny.Do not be fooled. In this slim volume, concepts such as egotistical monarchs, murdering husbands, demons, pinched nipples, and disgusting rotted food are talked about in an unflinching, direct language that is only really appropriate for older children.It is important to mention that there is no imagery that is offensive, unless you have a huge problem with artistic depictions of nipples. The paintings do NOT depict rape, sex, gory violence, or war -- all things depicted in some of the more famous paintings in the Louvre.My 6 year old is captivated by this book. I think he absolutely loves the directness of the language, and the variety of artworks depicted.What I like about the book is the way each page and image has a brief text that gives the child an idea of how to approach a new piece of art.This IS a great way to get early grade school children interested in viewing art. It even works well as an educational tool to help parents figure out the way to talk about and show a work of art to a child.
My wife and I picked up this book in 2004 during our first visit to the Louvre. We have shared it with our young sons in the three years since, and recently our oldest son (7 yrs, bright kid) has started picking it up and reading it to us and to his younger brother (4 yrs). I am thrilled, as it gives them an intro to the world of art, using some of the finest examples from the Louvre (Winged Victory, Mona Lisa, and some that are lesser-known to the general public). You can tell that the text was translated from the French to English, but the translation is well done and accessible, and is written for a pre-high-school age level. Not too long, not too short--probably about a 10-15 minute read. Great photos, with captions explaining the title of each work of art, the artist, and the year created (ranges provided for BC-era sculpture from Mesopotamia, Egypt, etc).
